David Iain Brown
Which 3 words best define how would you like your art to be perceived ?
HONEST, BOLD and GENUINE.
What creative challenge have you faced and overcome that has transformed your art practice?
The challenge to not have a studio when I first moved to Glasgow. I changed my art practice from printmaking to more of a painter. I’m now a painter with the mindset of a printmaker.
What tools do you use as part of the preliminary stages of your process?
I mainly use sketches, but it's usually more intuitive I go straight into the work with and idea of how it could look. I then let the work develop and change over the whole duration of the piece.
How do you usually start an art session - any habits or rituals ?
I get changed into my painting clothes, get the laptop on and listen to a random playlist on Spotify or listen to a podcast on YouTube.
How do you deal with doubts and fears?
Everyone doubts their practice at points, we all have bad days but I just get myself into the studio and do anything. Clean the space, do some research, read a book all of this is still helping your practice.
With what intentions do you infuse your art making?
What ever mood I'm in that day of creating I definitely feel plays a large part of what happens to the work, like colour choice and quality or markmaking.
Do you specifically schedule time for your art practice?
Whenever I'm off my part time job I’m in the studio. I'm an early studio type artist I can't do nights, I don't know why but just prefer later on in the day to chill and relax for the next day in the studio.
Where do you draw your color inspiration from ?
It comes from my surroundings, I extract colours from my everyday life as well as a more intuitive reaction to the piece.
What brilliant piece of advice were you given on your creative journey and would be happy to share?
A tutor / friend told me to be less precious in the making of the work. Enjoy the process and the end result will be something your happy with.
