Which 3 words best define how you would like your art to be perceived?
UNFETTERED, PLEASURABLE, NATURALNESS.
What creative challenge have you faced and overcome that has transformed your art practice?
For me the most difficult part of the creative process is writing the statement, especially since it's such an important part of the process. I'm not very good at writing and speaking, so it's really a challenge every time I write. I think I haven't really overcome it yet. But writing my statements does help me organize my thoughts and vein about my work. It also helps me to have a clearer idea of what I want to achieve when I paint.
What tools do you use as part of the preliminary stages of your process?
Research, photography, collage.
How do you usually start an art session - any habits or rituals?
I'm not used to sketching, but I do it all in my head. So I think about it for a long time before I start to draw, and it's kind of like a meditation process.
With which intentions do you infuse your art making?
I’ve been using oil paints to symbolize nature, and spray paints as a symbol of human civilization. My goal was to create a conflict between these two worlds but somehow the result is always balanced and harmonious.
I’ve been looking to find a balance between oil painting and spray on my canvas, just like we people need to find the perfect balance with our environment.
Do you specifically schedule time for your art practice?
Yes. Basically, I'm in my studio every afternoon during the week. Weekends off. I try to keep a regular work schedule, but there is still a lot of freedom and flexibility in my hours.
How do you deal with doubts and fears?
I can't deny that I am often self-doubting and anxious during the creative process. The way I deal with it is not to deal with it. If I keep trying to eliminate these negative emotions I might get stuck. I try to live with the negative emotions or I try to ignore them a little. The most important thing is not to let these emotions keep us from moving forward.
Where do you draw your color inspiration from?
I think it is partly inspired by nature and partly by my own pigments. I try to use these paints to create a special mix of colors to create a harmonious color scheme.
What brilliant piece of advice were you given on your creative journey and would be happy to share?
I think the most important thing is that we should not compare ourselves too much with others, but with ourselves. Try to make some progress every day. Do what you are good at, do what you can do. Find your own pace, don't be in a hurry.
